“Aspies Together” at The Lounge

Poster for Aspies Together at the Lounge

Last night I attended the “Aspies Together” fundraiser at The Lounge jazz club.  Aspies Together is a group in SL created by Sam Firehawk offering support for people on the autism spectrum. More information can be found at http://www.aspiestogether.com/.

The theme of the event was “The Haunted Carnie” and avatars got into the “spirit” of the evening whole-heartedly.  Everyone looked spooktacular enjoying the great music and dancing the night away. The fun continues today, from 12 noon to 8 pm slt in the carnival tent at  The Lounge.

Hibs rez day 2015_005

I logged in to Second Life on Saturday evening, having completely forgotten that it was my rez day!

However, my good friend Janey Bracken had not, so to my great surprise and delight I arrived to find that she had arranged a rez day party for me at The HangOut, Janis Short’s fantastic club.

Janis had done a wonderful job creating a celestial atmosphere and all the guests had gotten into the spirit of the event by wearing beautiful formal outfits that shimmered and glittered like twinkling stars.

I was extremely touched to have a party thrown in my honour and that so many of my friends were able to attend or contacted me to wish me all the best. 8 Years is a long time in the virtual world and I feel blessed to have met so many incredible people from all over the world; you are my angels and my stars, thank you for being a part of my life.

Last Saturday saw the opening of Xaphyre Ansar’s new jazz club “The Lounge”, an elegant and welcoming club sure to popular with all who enjoy jazz.

DJ Speelo Snook got things started with a selection of music that got everyone onto the dance floor.

It was a great day and a great beginning for a club that I am sure will become a second home to SL Jazzthusiasts!

SL12B – Overwhelming!

SL12B was scheduled to close June 28, but the builds continue to be open until July 4. I think performances have finished. As usual, for any information on SL12B, go to their website here.

SL Aviation Community

SL Aviation Community

Many of the dreams you find represented in SL12B are related to transportation; I found plots related to flying and motorcycles, and there are probably others I have not yet discovered.

Might be my dream but everyone else's nightmare!

Might be my dream but everyone else’s nightmare!

The SL Aviation community is at SL12B as well as another flying group I had never heard of, Passengers of SL,

Inside the plane you can watch videos of flying in SL

for those who wish to be flown, an interesting idea. For more information check here. Avatars who prefer to remain on the ground might find the motorcycle repair shop at “Freedom of the Road” more to their taste.

Freedom of the Road

Inside the shop are posters linking to groups, events and places of interest to bikers in SL.

Surfers of SL

Surfers of SL

And although not precisely a form of transportation, there was a plot for the Surfers of SL.

1920s Berlin at SL12B

1920s Berlin at SL12B

Role playing is found throughout SL and there are quite a few groups in SL12B. The well known 1920’s Berlin by Jo Yardley has a very atmospheric display.

Aqualonde Castle

Aqualonde Castle

Another group called Aqualonde, invites the visitor to “enter the magic of a fantasy realm inspired by Tolkien” at a beautiful castle build.
Some exhibitors have created what I will describe as “artistic dream” plots. SL is a wonderful place to explore your artistic side, whether you came in as an artist or decided to give creative activities a try once you entered SL.

Wonder what the cat's dreams are?

One site is “Flying Dreams” ; a dome shaped building where you find yourself surrounded by flight-related artworks created by Grazietta Cazenove.

The second plot, “Dreaming” by Caro Fayray was like entering a surrealist dream

sl12b metaphore_003

“Metaphore by Tutsy Navarathna”, a build by Harper Beresford, allows you to view a video “Metaphore”, which was the winner of the University of Western Australia 2014 MachinUWA VII award. It explores the “duplicity of nature and the nature of duplicity” and is based on a true story. It is definitely worth watching and I think all citizens of SL can relate to it in different ways.
sl12b sober journey_001

There are also informative or educational sites. I returned to the Astound sim, which I wrote about a couple of posts ago because I discovered another exhibitor I found to be of interest – Recovery Journey’s Sober Life by Nightbar Jewell. It has information on Alcoholic’s Anonymous, plus links, and from what I understand there are meetings in SL.

Whole Brain Health

Whole Brain Health

Another  educational build is “Whole Brain Health” which is packed with all sorts of information on how to maintain a healthy brain.

Happy Hunting - the hunts of SL

Happy Hunting – the hunts of SL

Also informative, in a different kind of way, is the “Happy Hunting” plot, about hunts that can be found around SL. “Happy Hunting” is also a TreetTV show.

Wisdomality

Wisdomality

And lastly there are “inspirational” builds such as “Wisdomality” by Yman Juran.

Light of Love

Light of Love

The names of the different sims reflect the experiences to be had : wonderous, astound, enchant, electrify, impressive, spectacular, stupendous, but for me the word that really encapsulates how I feel is overwhelmed.  There is so much creativity and energy to be found throughout SL.

An Exciting New Jazz Club Opening on Saturday

The Lounge - opening events

This coming Saturday, June 27, will see the opening of a new jazz club in SL. I was able to catch up with the owner, Xaphyre Ansar, the other day, to learn a little bit about the direction the club will take and get some information on the opening events and schedule.

Xaphyre Ansar

Xaphyre Ansar

Xaphyre describes “The Lounge” as “SL’s newest home for all true Jazzthusiasts. We welcome all lovers of the great genre that is Jazz in all it’s forms and sub-genres. From the classics (Basie, Coltrane, Gillespie, et al), to Bossa, World Fusion, Jazzanova, Swing, Electro-Swing, Funk, we love it and play it all! So come join us and find out what SL has been missing in this musical arena. An elegant and chic club with a chill atmosphere, to enjoy a romantic date at, or an evening of great music, lively conversation and great friends, and the drinks are always on us!”

Entering into the club

Entering into the club

” For our Grand Opening, we have prepared a fantastic lineup, not only of your favorite DJs but live performances as well by the fantastic Trowzer Boa, a live saxophonist who will be delighting us with a mix of his favorite Jazz covers as well as some of his own compositions. The events will be taking place throughout the day and through the evening, with the grand finale being DJ Xaph’s homage to the sultry and vogue days of old Havana, with her “Nights in Havana” set; you will not want to miss this spectacular Grand Finale to our inauguration day.”

“The Lounge” is very elegant, decorated in shades of blue with gold accents. There is a large dance floor, well stocked bar and comfortable seating both inside and outside on the terrace. The Grand Opening will be a formal affair, so get out your tuxes and gowns!

SL12B – It’s Spectacular!

sl12b day3_001

Today I had a look around the “Spectacular” section of SL12B. I must say that I love the names of the different areas and I get a kick when they are applied to the roads. For instance, in “Spectacular” you have “Spectacular Roads”. I don’t know about where you live, but where I live “Spectacular Roads” can be a dream in itself.

Dressage in SL

Dressage in SL

The first place I visited was “Dressage in SL”. Dressage is performed using mesh avatar horses in a Dressage court.sl12b Dressage2

There was nothing going on while I was there but I believe they have some competitions taking place during SL12B. More information on Dressage in SL can be found here.
sl12b dream happy dreams

Next, I was on to “Dreams of Tomorrow” where visitors are urged to move away from the dystopian views that are found in much of the current science fiction and instead dream and work towards a happier tomorrow.

The Lollygaggers exhibit

The Lollygaggers exhibit

I then found the exhibit for which I have the most natural affinity -“Lollygaggers SL12B”.

Virtual Ability

Virtual Ability

Dragging myself away from “Lollygaggers” I moved on to the “Virtual Ability” plot. For information on Virtual Ability, Inc. click here. Their SL12B exhibit has signs and pictures leading to a “path of dreams”.

Along the path of dreams

Along the path of dreams

The “path of dreams” leads up into the clouds where the visitor is encouraged to think of what their dream is and add it to the dream catcher.

Virtual Ability - the dream catcher

But although this is about dreams, one of the signs at the beginning of the path states that not only are the members of Virtual Ability dreaming,

The dream path - turning dreams to realities

The dream path – turning dreams to realities

they are working hard to find solutions to problems of accessibility as well.

Double Dragon Academy

Double Dragon Academy

Nearby I found an exhibit related to role playing, which is something that many people enjoy in SL. This plot is owned by the Double Dragon Academy, which is the oldest institution in SL for training, testing and certifying knights, rangers, warriors and lancers. More information may be found here.

Taking a break in beautiful and relaxing Windsong Garden

Taking a break in beautiful and relaxing Windsong Garden

Lastly I visited “Windsong Garden”, a delightful place to relax and recharge. “Windsong Garden” is an enclosed garden which has musical flowers.

When one of the flowers

When one of the flowers “chimes” it lights up, as can be seen with the yellow tulips

The flowers play in response to the SL wind, so I sat on a bench and enjoyed the peaceful sounds away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the outside the walls.

SL12B: What Dreams May Come

sl12b astound auditorium

SL12B, the annual community celebration, opened on June 21st. This year’s theme is “What Dreams May Come”. According to the SL12B website this theme was chosen because everything that appears in SL is born from someone’s dream and I can’t think of anything more appropriate than that. The SL12B website can be found here and is a great resource for those who want to visit SL12B. You can find SLurls to all the exhibits I mention in this post on their website as well as schedules of performances and other general information.

Builders Brewery

Builders Brewery

So far I have only visited a small part of the “Astound” region, but even so there have been many varied sites that exemplify the diversity of experiences to be found throughout SL. Fittingly, I think, the very first place I visited belongs to the Builders Brewery, which has helped so many avatars try to build their own dreams and really exemplifies the theme of this year’s celebration. You can read about Builders Brewery here.

University of Washington Avalumni exhibit

University of Washington Avalumni exhibit

Nearby is the University of Washington Avalumni exhibit, where they declare “Aspirations Are Dreams You Work On Together”. Students in rl use both rl and sl collaboratively to learn and try to make their dreams realities. More information on the UW VW Avalumni group can be found here.

Entrance to Avatar Dreams

Entrance to Avatar Dreams

The next plot I visited was “Avatar Dreams”. In this case the avatar dream was broken down into 4 phases: Familiar, Nesting, Bonding, Living. On entering the building you started in the “Familiar” room, depicting the struggle we all have to become familiar with living in the new environment of Second Life. The next three rooms depicted the continuing journey of the avatar, finishing with “Living”.

Confederation of Democratic Simulators

Confederation of Democratic Simulators

Following this I went on to the exhibit owned by the Confederation of Democratic Simulators (CDS). This group was originally formed in 2004. It is now a five region community operated by its citizens. They have their own constitution, code of laws and representative assembly, and from what I understand, they developed as a way to ensure that sims remained even though avatars come and go for various reasons, which can result in the loss of community. A overview of the history of the CDS can be found here.

Memory and Matter

Matter and Memory

One exhibit I particularly enjoyed was “Matter and Memory” , where photographs taken by Ziki Questi between 2011 and 2015 were on display.

sl12b Memory and Matter

Some of the photographs were a trip down memory lane for me, including a few of sims that no longer exist, while some I was not familiar with but still enjoyed because of their beauty.

Relaxing

Relaxing

Next door is a lovely little garden area named “Perfect Paradise” where you could sit and relax for a little while.

enjoying the scenery

However, nature can be surprising, I went to sit on a log near the entrance and was quickly swallowed up!

Disappearing!

Disappearing!

sl12b no dreams the same

I will leave the last word to the “No Dreams are Alike” display. Here you will find a bedroom with a large bed and interactive sheep (be careful!) leaping across.

Interactive sheep

After summarizing the exhibits I visited one can easily see how many different types of dreams individuals, and groups, have and realize that truly no dreams are alike and they are always under construction.
